Do I Need A Physician’s Clearance? Your safety is my primary concern. Whether a client needs a physician's clearance is dependent upon the responses given by the client from a health survey given during the initial evaluation. When you complete your paperwork for my evaluation, I will ensure it is safe for you to participate in a wellness program. In general, men over age 45 and women over age 55 are at higher risk for exercise-related complications; however, there are certainly an abundance of healthy people over those ages, and moderate exercise is generally not a problem, and no clearance is needed. More specifically, if your data shows you have 2 or more high-risk conditions, you will need to obtain a physician's clearance before we can begin working together. Usually this only requires a phone call or a fax on my part--there is no burden to you; however, if 2 or more conditions exist and you have not seen your doctor about these issues, you should visit him or her anyway. Health conditions which require clearance no matter what include heart disease or pregnancy; however, if neither of these are present and a client has 2 or more other high-risk conditions, such as diabetes and osteoporosis, or finished with PT and age 65, then a clearance is necessary. Again, this is easily done. For exercise after pregnancy, the client must have either been cleared by their physician or have had their post-natal release visit (usually around 6 weeks after delivery). All documented and discussed information disclosed both during evaluations and sessions is considered confidential.
